A Visit from the Head Girl WEGC

As part of our study on Leadership we invited the head girl from WEGC to talk to us about leadership in schools. Michaela Liko came to our class and these are some of the questions we asked her.
We were hoping to record the talk we had but unfortunately technical difficulties meant we could not do this. These are the things we could remember – sorry Michaela if we didn’t get them all down – we loved having you come to our class!

We were very impressed with Michaela who we thought knew a lot about leadership and told us in words we could understand what she does as Head Girl.

What responsibilities do you have?
I run meetings every week with the prefects to sort out what we are working on. I represent the school at events. I link the students and the staff. I meet each week with the principal.

How long have you been head girl?
I have been head girl since the beginning of this year.

Do you wear a badge?
Yes – It’s on my blazer and says Head Girl.

Do you get a reward for being head girl?
No I don’t get given anything. I do it because I want to give back, because I want to be part of improving the school. That is what I like to do – give back so being able to do that is the ‘reward’.

What do you like/dislike about being head girl?
There is nothing I dislike – it is sometimes a big load because it is a lot of work. I love being the leader, it is an honour.

How did you get to be head girl?
I put myself forward, we had to do a speech to the year group, there was a vote. The top 4 girls were interviewed and I found out I had the job on the last day of school last year. I was so proud – WEGC is my ‘family’.

What would happen if you didn’t do a good job?
I don’t know. No-one has ever done a ‘bad’ job. If you did something really bad you would be stood down.

Are you the only head girl at your school?
Yes, but here is a Deputy and 36 prefects.

What do you find the hardest part of the job?
There is lots to do, I am very busy. I don't like to say no to anyone.

Were you a leader when you were younger?
No I was a quiet person who sat at the back of the classroom.

Are you always supported by others?
Yes I am supported by the Deputy head girl and all the prefects, and the school.

Thanks Michaela!!!!
