Suna
the Greedy Giant
A
folk story from Fiji, retold by Stella M
Suna
the giant was by far the greediest person on the island. Instead of eating his
fair share he would eat his fair share and more! The villagers where fed up.
While they where sitting in the town hall brainstorming, a tall shadow loomed
over the doorway.
“It’s
Suna’’ they whispered. Then a young fit man walked in “You are all invited to a
banquet on the other island tomorrow.’’ “YAY!!!” everyone cheered. The young
fit man left. “SHHHHHHH!!!” hissed the mayor “What if Suna wakes up, he will
want to come! And we won’t be able to stop him!” “Good point.” muttered the
villagers. So the next day they hopped into their canoes and paddled away. When
they where halfway there, Suna woke up. “Me hungry me want fooood!” He roared. Total silence. Suna looked around.
Then, on the horizon he saw the canoes.
Suna
made the assumption they where going to a feast “HOW DARE THEY GO TO A FEAST
WITH OUT ME” he bellowed. He stomped to the edge of the island sprang into the
water and ran to the next island as fast as his chubby legs could carry him.
Little fish swarmed around the waves that Suna’s fat feet made. Suna passed the
canoes, as he did he heard the villagers cries “Oh no” they wailed, “Suna woke up!
He will eat all the food! “”HAHAHA” Suna chuckled to himself.
When
he reached the island his eyes widened with glee. “YE HAW!” he cried and feasted on fish,
gobbled the grapes, consumed the crabs, wolfed down the yams and polished off
the peaches.
Then
the villagers from the other island arrived. “Suna!” they groaned “you ate
everything! ” and sure enough there was nothing left Suna had eaten everything!
Suna laughed so hard his belly shook like palm leaves in a hurricane. Suna sighed,
“I’m going back to the island. ” said Suna, but half way there, just in the
middle of the two islands Suna felt sleepy, Suna yawned. The water felt so warm
that he just drifted to sleep.
Suna
had eaten so much that he grew and grew and GREW in his sleep. His chest grew
and swelled till his head reached one island and his feet touched the other.
When he woke up he realised he was jammed between the islands. He thrashed his
arms and legs around but he was truly stuck. Hours later he turned completely
stone and from this day on he’s stayed that way.

Kiu
and Ugauga by Hannah M
Long
ago in Niue there was a bird called Kiu and a hermit crab called Ugauga… One
day Kiu was boasting as usual to Ugauga, Ugauga got so sad because he had
nothing to boast about, Ugauga suddenly blurted out “LETS HAVE A RACE, race you to that big rock
pool”. “Okay “replied Kiu “lets start tomorrow”.
Night
fell, Kiu went straight to sleep, but Ugauga couldn’t sleep he was worried
about the race.
Suddenly
he thought of something, silently he crept out of his shell and started to go
to the big rock pool. He travelled all through the night.
When
Kiu awoke he thought Ugauga was still asleep.
He
said to Kuli and Pusi as they were passing by, “Ugauga has challenged me to a race
but look how lazy he is “and kicked Ugauga’s shell and to his surprise the
shell was empty!
He
was shocked that Ugauga had tricked him. Kiu was so upset that the slowest crab
in Niue had beaten him.
So
from that day on you can here Kiu crying along the beach of Niue.

Kiu and Ugauga – Retold by Ibanez.
Long ago there lived two unique creatures, a
gorgeous bird called Kiu, and a nice hermit crab called Ugauga. They lived in
Niue. Where they stayed was a Rock pool.
Kiu was quite vain. Probably a bit too vain.
Kiu always showed off. Ugauga was always jealous of him. He started to hurt Ugauga’s
feelings. One day Ugauga challenged Kiu to a race.
Ugauga
won the race by sneaking out of his shell and Ugauga got to do a head start and
he won the race.
Kiu was crying up and down the reef because
he lost the race.
Ugauga felt so pleased with himself! And he
lived happily ever after.
THE END.
Kiu and Ugauga. A legend from Niue.
Once upon a time, on the island
of Niue there was a bird called Kiu and a hermit crab named Ugauga.
One morning Kiu was bragging
to Ugauga about his speed and handsomeness. Ugauga couldn’t stand it any longer
so he challenged Kiu to a race. Kiu scoffed but agreed for fun. They arranged
the race for first thing the next day.
That night Ugauga stayed
awake, thinking. How could he beat Kiu, the fastest creature on the island?
Suddenly he had an idea. Ugauga fell asleep smiling.
The next morning at dawn
Ugauga wriggled out of his shell and set off on the race track.
Soon after Kiu woke up and
saw Ugauga’s shell on the ground. “Wake up lazybones!” said Kiu. Just at that
moment Kuli the dog and Pusi the cat were passing by. Kiu told them how silly
Ugauga was to challenge him to a race. He kicked Ugauga’s shell only to find a
little sand in it, no crab.
“Oh no! Ugauga has started
without me!” He set off as fast as he could. Kiu flew over the rock pools,
crying shrilly. He looked down and saw Ugauga reclining in a pool of warm
water. Kuli and Pusi ran off laughing to tell the whole island of Niue what had
happened. Now Kiu’s descendants fly around the rock pools crying shrilly.
The
End.

KIU AND UGAUGA retold by Jessica
On the island of Niue there was a bird called Kiu and a crab called
Ugauga. One day Kiu said “look at my awesome wings! “ they are
So shiny he boasted to Ugauga “ I am the fastest bird on the island”
Ugauga felt very sad, Kiu was fast and Ugauga was slow. Ugauga didn’t
have anything to boast about so Kiu kept on boasting and
when Ugauga couldn’t take it any more he said “ Lets have a Race!”
We’ll see who gets to the
rock-pools first!” Ugauga said.
“How are you able to race with me?! I’m fast and you’re SLOW”
you’ll never beat me! Kiu said.
We’ll start the race in the morning said Ugauga.
When it was dark, Kiu went to sleep straight away ……
but Ugauga couldn’t go to sleep because he was afraid that
he would lose to a race with a fast bird like Kiu. So he briskly
slipped out of his shell and left it next to Kiu. Then he hurried as quick as
he could to the rock pool.
At daybreak Kiu woke up. He looked at Ugauga’s shell and prodded it.
“WAKE UP U SLEEPY HEAD!!!!!” there was no answer. Kiu walked
into the sun light and got ready for the race. Kiu said “ what a
beautiful bird I am! How dumb of the crab to challenge me. A canine called Kuli
and a feline called Pusi were walking by. “Ugauga has challenged me to a race!”
Kiu said to them. “But he’s being lazy and not…WAKING UP!
I am the most good-looking bird on the island, it’s so stupid of him
to challenge such a handsome bird like me!” and Kiu turns Ugauga’s
shell and to his surprise it was empty! Then
Kiu realized that Ugauga
started the race without him, so Kiu raced to the rock pool, squawking as he flew.
When he looked down Kiu saw Ugauga at the Rock pools first. Ugauga was
laughing and he looked as if he was pleased of himself. Kuli and Pusi went off
to tell everybody on Niue what happened.
Kiu was so upset that he got beaten by the slowest crab on the Island, he
couldn’t stop crying about it. Kiu’s relatives fly, squawking,
up and down the shores on the island of Niue. And Ugauga lived
happily ever after.

The Story of Kiu and Ugauga. Retold by Holly
Once upon a time on the lush island of Niue, lived a
boastful bird called Kiu and a small, sluggish hermit crab called Ugauga.
Every day Kiu boasted about how elegant he was, Ugauga
didn’t like it, so he said ‘lets have a race to the first rock pool!’ Kius face
lit up with laughter. ‘You! Kiu said, with a smirk. ‘A sluggish hermit crab like
yourself you haven’t got a chance!’’Kui broke into laughter while Ugauga sat
there regretting his decision.
When Kiu was asleep Ugauga sat there brainstorming a
plan that might just work.
In the morning Kiu woke up stretching his gorgeous wings.
‘Get up you lazy hermit crab!’ Kiu shrieked. No answer. Kiu angrily kicked
Ugauga’s shell, to his surprise the shell was empty. Kiu realized Ugauga had
tricked him, and immediately flew over to the rock pool.
And to this very day Kiu is still flying up and down
the same rock pool crying shrilly.
KIU
AND UGAUGA – Re told by Cameron.
A long time ago there was a bird called Kiu. He was the most
beautiful bird in Niue.
And there was a hermit crab called Ugauga. He was the slowest and
clumsiest crab on the island. One day Kiu kept on boasting to Ugauga, Ugauga
got sad. He was slow and heavy and there was nothing to boast about. He
couldn’t stand Kius boasting.
Ugauga thought about having a race. So then he said to Kiu lets have
a race. First
To the rock pool wins. Kiu laughed. How can you beat me you’re slow
and clumsy. You’ll never beat me but I’ll have a race just for fun. I think we
should start first thing in the morning.
When darkness came Kiu fell asleep first. Ugauga stayed awake.
Ugauga had an idea. He started straight away, leaving his shell
lying there. Kiu awoke. He went by Ugaugas shell and kicked it over and then he
knew that Ugauga had tricked him. He flew to the rock pool as fast as he could.
He saw Ugauga at the rock pool looking very pleased with himself.
And Ugauga lived happily ever after. Kiu was flying around anxiously.
